Methods for Rust Removal and Anti-corrosion of Steel Structures

Steel

Steel structures have become a common structural form in modern buildings. We can see that steel structures are widely used in industrial plants, warehouses, gymnasiums, shopping malls, airports, garages, high-speed rail stations, railways, etc. Especially for some large-span structures, steel structures have played an irreplaceable advantage. It can be said that our daily life and industrial production are inseparable from steel structures.

Steel structures are all made of steel, but steel is very easy to rust. Especially in humid and special industrial chemical environments, rust on steel structures is more common. Rust on steel will greatly affect the service life of steel structures and even cause safety accidents. Therefore, rust removal and anti-corrosion of steel structures are extremely important.

Steel must be rusted before processing and production. The general rust removal methods are: manual rust removal, shot blasting rust removal, pickling rust removal, etc.

Manual rust removal: It is to use some simple tools such as scrapers, grinding wheels, wire brushes, etc. to manually polish and rust the rust on the surface of the components. This method is not only inefficient, but also incomplete in rust removal. However, it is convenient and easy to use, and is not limited by construction site conditions. It is often used in steel structure maintenance.

In addition to manual rust removal, there is also a method of rust removal using electric grinding equipment, such as angle grinding wheels, grinders, etc. for mechanical grinding and rust removal. Rust removal efficiency is higher, and it is also a commonly used rust removal method.

Sandblasting rust removal: Sandblasting rust removal is very efficient, and the rust removal is thorough and effective. It can remove the rust layer adhering to the metal surface cleanly and smoothly. There are wet sandblasting, dry sandblasting, shot blasting, etc. The shot blasting machine commonly used in steel structure processing plants is one. It is also a commonly used rust removal method in steel structure processing plants.

Pickling rust removal: It is a chemical rust removal method, which is to immerse steel or components in acid to allow the acid to react chemically with the oxide on the metal surface to remove rust. The surface of the component after pickling must be thoroughly rinsed with water, and then neutralized with 5% sodium carbonate solution. This method is more suitable for rust removal of complex steel structure components.

The rust removal method used in the steel structure processing process is not unique. Different rust removal methods can be suitable for different components to achieve the best rust removal effect. After the steel components are rust-removed, rust removers will be applied, and anti-corrosion treatment will be carried out after drying.

General method for anti-corrosion treatment of steel components: Use protective layers to prevent corrosion of steel structures. Usually protective layers are divided into the following types.

  1. Metal protective layer: Through electroplating, spraying, chemical plating, hot plating and other methods, a metal protective layer is formed on the surface of the steel structure to isolate the contact between the metal and the corrosive medium to achieve an anti-corrosion effect.
  2. Chemical protective layer: Through chemical methods, a corrosion-resistant compound film is formed on the surface of the steel to isolate the contact between the corrosive medium and the metal to achieve an anti-corrosion effect.
  3. Non-metallic protective layer: Use paint, plastic, enamel, paint, etc. to form a protective film on the metal surface by brushing or spraying to achieve an anti-corrosion effect.

When processing steel components, rust removal and anti-corrosion are both necessary steps. Only when rust removal and anti-corrosion are done well can the durability and service life of steel components be ensured.
